I wanted to achieve the relative simplicity of the SPI boardgame War in the East, and Gary wanted to appeal to the grognards that have come to love his attention to detail and realistic combat models. For my own part, I have no disagreement with using this design approach -- at least, on a limited basis -- in lower level simulations (e.g., battalion-level actions) or even in divisional or corps-level games, so long as both 'limited information' and a certain amount of attacker 'opportunity cost' is also included in the higher level game design. I haven't had it out of the box since, but it had such an impact on me that I haven't forgotten the experience. How does one resolve an exchange if both sides have the same number of defense factors? WAR IN THE WEST is the West Front companion game to WAR IN THE EAST, 2nd Edition and, when combined with its East Front counterpart, forms WAR IN EUROPE. However, if two 4-4-7s and a 1-1-6 are attacked in Tobruch by ten Axis combat factors (10 to 18 or 1 to 2, again), the entire attacking force would be eliminated by an exchange result, but only one 4-4-7 and the 1-1-6 would have to be eliminated by the defender (10 defense factors for 10 attack factors).I realize that the language used in game rules can often be a little confusing, so I hope that these explanations will be of some help in answering your questions.Best Regards, JCBIII. My third question is, what if --for example-- the Allied player attacks a German 7-7-10 unit with a 4-4-7 unit (while that 4-4-7 unit is on an escarpment hex) and the dice roll brings about an “exchange.” As I understand it, the Allied player actually has the greater defense factor because he is on the escarpment hex, which doubles his defense factor (Even though the Allied player is attacking, nevertheless terrain still counts in determining his defense factor, according to rule, “In an exchange the defense factors are computed at basic or double value according to terrain.”). Moves 20, page 15. Since the 3 attack factors from the German 3-3-10 unit will not suffice to satisfy this rule, therefore the 7-7-10 unit must be eliminated. SPI, WAR IN THE WEST (1976) WAR IN THE WEST is an operational level simulation, based on the KURSK Game System, of World War II in the Western European and North African Theaters of Operations. Thus, a 4-4-7 occupying an escarpment hex would have a defense strength of '8' while a 7-7-10 attacking from an adjacent escarpment hex would have an attack factor of '7' (its potential defense factor of '14' would be irrelevant in this case). I'm sorry that I have been recorded as Anon, but I didn't see where to leave my name. The game included a map, 200 counters representing Israeli and Arab forces, and a 12-page rulebook. Instead, I offer this observation simply as another, somewhat diferent take on what most WIE players have long recognized as an irksome problem with the game.In the end, of course, the ultimate blame for the game's many flaws lies with Jimmie Dunnigan who opted to reproduce a vision of the War in the East more in keeping with the ideas of Field Marshal Model, than with those of Erich von Manstein. The War in the East by SPI. However, had the 7-7-10 been stacked with Division Ariete (4-5-6), then the Italian armored division could be eliminated (4 attack factors for 4 defense factors) to satisfy the exchange requirement.Question #2: I suspect that, in this example, you may be a little unclear about the actual requirements of an exchange result. Obviously, opinions on this will vary based on how different players view the simulation function of ZOCs. My second question is, what happens if, using different units, an “exchange” is rolled, but the number of defense factors is the same for both the German and Allied units, either due to modifications of terrain or due to the normal adding up of defense factors without terrain modifications? Still, I hope that the various posts, game descriptions, book reviews, critiques, and other hobby-related material that I present are of interest to those players who still appreciate and play some of the older “classic” games. Thanks! This also means, by the way, that the German 7-7-10 pzr regiment would be attacking at 1 to 2 (7 to 8) rather than at 1 to 1.Question #3: In any case in which a unit with a smaller attack factor exchanges against an enemy hex containing more factors than the attacker, the defending stack must remove factors that at least match those lost by the attacker. This life-or-death struggle between Nazi Germany and Communist … The German player’s dice roll results in an “exchange.” Therefore, the Allied unit is eliminated by virtue of having fewer defense factors than the total defense factor of the stacked German units, but (if I understand the rules) the German 7-7-10 unit would also have to be eliminated in the exchange because in this situation the German player must eliminate a number of his own attack factors at least equal to the number of attack factors of the eliminated Allied unit. I will enclose a manifest so you can see what you have. However, if you could only keep and play one edition, which edition would it be and why? But the allied player must also remove a number of his attack factors at least equal to those lost by the German player. In fact, at the request of one of my gaming friends, I examined this set of alternative WIE rules in some detail and, although there were a number of elements that I either liked or at least found interesting (the Soviet cavalry rules, for example), on the whole, I was unconvinced that Chuck's changes (ingenious though some of them are) really succeeds in correcting the major structural flaws imbedded in the original design of WAR IN THE EAST.In any case, at the request of my friend, I jotted down some of my thoughts about the "Attack on the March" Variant Rules (two pages worth, actually) and while I don't have time to go over all of them right now, I will go ahead and share the first of my several comments, by repeating it here: "First, I am a little skeptical about incorporating what are, for all intents and purposes 'hasty attacks' into the game architecture of WIE. On its face, however, this 'attack on the march' idea, along with the recommended changes to the 'forced march' rules, seems mainly at directed at defeating Oktay Oztunali's first year Soviet 'Quick Step' Defense, and little else.
